Three runners from CrowdControlHQ last night took up the GoodGym Challenge; to combine outdoor exercise with doing good in the community.
Formed in September 2009 and starting in Bethnal Green GoodGym combines running with doing community projects;
- Running in groups to do physical tasks for community organisations.
- Make regular social visits to isolated older people and spend time chatting to them.
- Running specific missions for older people; clearing gardens, changing lightbulbs and doing odd-jobs for people who struggle to do them alone.
From January 2012, they worked with the London Legacy Development Company to expand the project to the boroughs surrounding the Olympic Park, and from mid-2012 the scope exxpaned to Camden and Bristol and we started working with professional trainers and running coaches. In 2014 they opened up in Lambeth, Westminster and Newham and other London Boroughs and they are now in Birmingham.
Last nights challenge was to clean up the canals around the City Centre and Aston University whilst doing a 7.5km run follwed by circuits in St Paul's Square. The team enjoyed the challenge and will be back next week.
