Social media is always on and will always need refuelling with more content, campaigns and conversations.
While 99% of the time this is a challenge to be relished by social media marketers, there might be days where you need fresh inspiration to keep innovating and pushing the boundaries of social media.
To help you on those days, we've collated a list of our favourite motivational quotes to refocus your energy, provide fresh perspective, or even offer reassurance when required! 🔥
“The cost of being wrong is less than the cost of doing nothing.”
We had to kick the blog off with this quote from author and award-winning marketing expert, Seth Godin. Often the hardest part of pushing the boundaries of social media marketing is taking that first step. This can be particularly true if you work in an organisation where your colleagues don't always see the value of social media. 👎
But if one thing's for sure it's that social media won't wait while you decide whether your great idea really is a great idea. Social media changes at an incredible pace and if you wait too long to launch your new marketing campaign or start your new initiative then you might have missed your chance.
While we're not advocating taking risks for the sake of them, well planned game-changing strategies can create national awareness, revolutionise the service you offer, or save your organisation significant sums. So keep this quote in mind when you're not sure whether to take the plunge! 💪
“You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”
This is a beautiful quote from the poet and author, Maya Angelou, reminding us that while we don't have a limited amount of good ideas, sometimes you do have to push yourself and work to kick start creative thinking.
To get you and your team in the zone for innovating, consider:
- Switching up your brainstorming tactics
- Getting a change of scenery or hosting a walking meeting
- Identifying a couple of social media accounts you admire to provide inspiration 😍
- Taking Hel Reynolds' Comms Creative monthly challenges to try something new!
"Of all of our inventions for mass communication, pictures still speak the most universally understood language."
If you're not already using images and video as part of your social media content strategy then this quote certainly illustrates just how important visual content is, and it's still as true as it was when Walt Disney first said it.
It's proven that not only can we take in more information more quickly from images, but that we remember more of the information for longer too. With that in mind, it's no surprise why the social networks also favour content with visual elements and they routinely attract more engagement than posts with text alone. 📸
To get started, consider the following options to collect and create more visual content:
- Repurpose images or videos that you already have into new content with a slightly different angle
- Empower and train your colleagues to become awesome comms producers, taking photos and videos of interesting/heart-warming/funny things they see
- Use Canva or Animoto to create simple graphics to further enhance your messages

“The headlines which work best are those which promise the reader a benefit.”
In all areas of marketing it's easy to get caught up communicating the features of your new product/service/offer and forget that this can mean nothing if it doesn't help your audience. This quote from advertising legend, David Ogilvy is a great reminder to refocus your copywriting on the benefits and outcomes your audience can expect.
This is much more irresistible as your audiences know that they'll get value from whatever action you're asking them to take. 🙋♀️

“If your stories are all about your products and services, that’s not storytelling. It’s a brochure. Give yourself permission to make the story bigger.”
As a social media marketer you have the power to shape how your audiences see your brand. As Jay Baer says that goes beyond communicating the products and services you have to offer, but helping your audiences to see how you can help them, what your organisation stands for and who you are. ⚡️
Consider how you can balance key information about your services with other themes and campaigns that are more closely aligned to your audiences' interests, concerns or objectives.
“If you love what you’re doing… that will make it so much easier to actually sit down and create content, inspire, entertain, and educate. That’s what’s really important!”
If the content that you're creating doesn't excite you it might be a sign that it's not the right thing. If you're not interested in it then chances are your audiences won't be either. 😴
If in doubt, refocus your energy back to ideas you love and the end product will be better as your motivation, commitment and enjoyment will shine through!
"If you're not regularly experimenting with your social media efforts, you're not maximising your social."
Last but by no means least, we wanted to finish with this important reminder from social media author, keynote speaker and consultant, Neal Schaffer. As Neal says the beauty of social media is that it's such a rapidly moving and flexible platform that gives marketers the perfect playground in which to experiment. 🙌
Social media is still a relatively new channel that's constantly changing and so there's no one hard and fast rule as to what works for which organisations and when. That means the only way to find out is to test different campaigns, styles of content, themes etc. and learn from the results. So what are you waiting for? Get experimenting! 🏃♀️
