From the naïve to the gullible – just another week in social media!

This morning we awoke to the worrying news that hackers have been accessing British webcams to watch the public unknowingly at home, at the office and even in the gym!

Apparently, the information commissioner’s officer (ICO) has been monitoring the situation closely and reviewing the evidence which has been posted on a website over the past month, including pictures shockingly from within a children's nursery.

The issue has arisen as a result of the camera owners failing to change the passwords, instead relying on the factor settings to keep them safe.

Despite authorities requests to have the Russian site taken down, in a bizarre twist, administrators contacted by Sky News say that they are in fact doing Britain a favour by highlighting the issue of security!

In fairness, there may be some merit in what they say judging by the fact that of the 1,764 British cameras featured on the site, there are now only 584 left open and streaming. So perhaps a wake up call indeed for many.

To the more gullible elements of the community, the other story that is grabbing the headlines this week is the issue of ‘LIKE farming’ built on the promise of a reward, to gullible fans of products, celebrities and brands if they like a Facebook page.

One such competition is due to finish today (November 20th) with over 200k people thinking they are in with a chance of winning one of two (Yes TWO) Audi R8 cars today if they like a Facebook Page.

The Guardian report that security firm Bitdefender found viruses embedded in films on the competition page designed to leave the clicker a victim ‘clickjacking’. Those who have fallen foul of clicking the links may find themselves with identify theft and suffering from other issues associated with malware.

The car lovers scam is not the first of its kind. It follows a spate of malicious campaigns, many of which leverage the celebrity culture to entice people to click a malicious link.

In fact, Cheryl Cole fans should beware as she has been found to be the celebrity from which you are most likely to catch a malicious virus. So please protect yourselves.
