News that from 8 April Microsoft will no longer be supporting Windows XP has created a great deal of column inches on the demise of this aged operating system. But will it cause problems for UK businesses?
James Leavesley, CEO of CrowdControlHQ looks at some of the issues facing tech businesses and end users. “There are two main issues facing UK business and that includes public sector organisations,” he said. “Firstly, people have become used to the interface and are resistant to change, in particular the move away from Internet Explorer to other browsers. Secondly, some businesses don't want to spend money on replacing systems that work, nor do they want the expenditure of retraining their staff.”
As the CEO of a tech business Leavesley is well aware of the challenges that change brings for companies operating in this space. "We understand the impact of the evolution of web browsers but the reality is few of our customers, especially those in the public sector, have the budget available for mass IT infrastructure upgrades. In addition, we are increasingly seeing some of the big North American tech companies telling their customers that their products will perform best on Chrome, Firefox and Safari, which means a whole raft of their users who use other browsers will not be getting the best out of the system they have purchased”.
“Social Media management tools such CrowdControlHQ are critical to public sector organisations and businesses that need to communicate with the public on a large scale, so we have invested in our product to ensure that it works on older browsers akin to our client base. We are not turning our back on our customers who do not have the funds to invest in major IT upgrades,” explained Leavesley.
“We have a user centric approach to our technology and have a concern that some of the opinion coming out of North America shows they are not taking account of the practical implications for the every day UK business or public sector organisation. Don’t let your customers down because they are not able to upgrade. Service is more than a word, it is about looking after the needs of your customer whatever they may be”, he advised.
